Hydrogen Offers Promising Future for Long-Haul Trucking Industry | Energy Technology Area
Hydrogen Offers Promising Future for Long-Haul Trucking Industry | Energy Technology Area:
Hydrogen fuel cells generate electricity through an electrochemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen, which combine to generate electricity, heat, and water. One fuel cell can generate about 300 watts of power, so in order to generate enough power to run a car’s electric motor, the fuel cells need to be combined in series into a fuel cell stack.
To meet DOE’s targets for hydrogen-fueled long-haul tractor trailer trucks, M2FCT researchers have identified the key differences between designing hydrogen fuel cells for light-duty vehicles versus heavy-duty vehicles.

Optimized joining technology is opening the door to the safe use of hydrogen in the aviation industry
Optimized joining technology is opening the door to the safe use of hydrogen in the aviation industry:
Eco-friendly flying is on the horizon. All over the world, researchers are developing new technologies to achieve this goal. One focus of developments is the idea of using hydrogen-powered engines for aircraft in the future. The aircraft companies, though, face the challenge of storing this energy source. Hydrogen turns liquid when cooled to minus 253 degrees Celsius, and only then can it be used as a so-called cryogenic fuel. Both tanks and pipe systems in the aircraft have to be absolutely tight at such low temperatures. An innovative new welding process has been developed to help: magnetic pulse welding. Researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Material and Beam Technology IWS in Dresden have now demonstrated that this joining technology can produce extremely resilient, metallic mixed joints for cryogenic applications. They successfully achieved these outstanding joint properties in cooperation with the Technical University of Munich.

Aberdeen International (TSX:AAB, F:A8H) and AES-100 Inc. Identify Nuclear Plants as Additional Market Potential for Its Hydrogen - Bloomberg:
Nuclear plants appear to be a perfect component to produce green hydrogen,
while ensuring the nuclear plants power output to be stable and therefore
maximizing efficiency. Excess electricity and steam produced by the nuclear
reactor could be used to produce hydrogen in times when a reactor would have
to be tuned down due to less demand from the grid.
The European Union imports 55% of its energy ($350 billion) and has a goal to
cut its GHG emissions to 40% below 1990 levels. Therefore, nuclear power will
remain an important part of Europe's Green Energy output and could transform
into a major piece in the hydrogen strategy. AES-100 Inc. will continue to
investigate opportunities and markets for hydrogen.
