Deutsche Aircraft and H2FLY join forces to explore hydrogen powered flight

The partnership will see the two companies convert the Dornier 328 aircraft for hydrogen flight, with the demonstrator aircraft expected to take to the skies in 2025. The program is expected to validate the potential for hydrogen to deliver climate neutral regional air travel with up to 40 seats, while demonstrating German leadership in this important field. Having grown out of a partnership between the German Aerospace Center and the University of Ulm, H2FLY has demonstrated innovative Hydrogen Fuel Cell technology in aviation. The four-seater hydrogen-electric-powered HY4 proved successfully in multiply flight campaigns and over 70 take-offs the applicability of this technology in aviation. With its range of up to 750 km regional markets can be developed. Today’s announcement marks the next step on the journey towards making climate neutral regional flight a reality, with the teams planning to equip the demonstrator aircraft with a 1.5MW hydrogen system, making it the most powerful hydrogen-electric-powered aircraft to date.

Hyzon Motors, Chart Industries to develop liquid hydrogen fuel cell-powered truck, targeting 1,000-mile range | Hyzon Motors

Hyzon, a global supplier of zero-emission, hydrogen fuel cell-powered heavy vehicles, and Chart, a leading independent global manufacturer of highly engineered equipment servicing multiple applications in the energy and industrial gas markets, announced today an agreement to develop and produce a liquid, hydrogen-powered heavy-duty commercial vehicle with a range of up to 1,000 miles. Using liquid in place of gaseous hydrogen in heavy transport brings numerous advantages. Because liquid hydrogen storage is twice as dense as the current 700 bar gaseous storage, a tank of liquid hydrogen fuels a vehicle for nearly twice the distance. Liquid hydrogen also improves a truck’s payload capacity because the storage tanks weigh less than 700 bar tanks.

Electrokinetic Proton Transport in Triple (H+/O2−/e−) Conducting Oxides as a Key Descriptor for Highly Efficient Protonic Ceramic Fuel Cells - Seong - 2021 - Advanced Science - Wiley Online Library

In this regard, we employ the isotope exchange diffusion profile (IEDP) method in which deuterium was used as a tracking indicator of proton diffusion via time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS).[8] This strategy enables to precisely evaluate the proton tracer diffusion coefficient (D*H) analysis of triple conducting oxide, PrBa0.5Sr0.5Co1.5Fe0.5O5+δ (PBSCF), excluding the interactions of oxide ions and electrons. The proton diffusion coefficient value of PBSCF at 550 °C (D*H, 1.04 × 10−6 cm2 s−1) is two orders of magnitude higher than its oxygen diffusion coefficient at 590 °C (D*O, 1.9 × 10−8 cm2 s−1). The D*H of PBSCF shows higher value than D*O of typical mixed ionic and electronic conductors (MIECs) such as Ba0.5Sr0.5Co0.8Fe0.2O3−δ (BSCF), PrBaCo2O5+δ (PBCO), GdBaCo2O5+δ (GBCO), La0.6Sr0.4Co0.2Fe0.8O3−δ (LSCF), and La0.6Sr0.4CoO3−δ (LSC) (1.63 × 10−9–3.01 × 10−11 cm2 s−1) at 550 °C. Furthermore, we have successfully obtained the surface exchange coefficient of a proton (k*H) in the value of 2.60 × 10−7 cm s−1. Based on the outstanding proton kinetics of PBSCF, the excellent electrochemical performance is obtained in practical PCFC condition (e.g., 0.42 W cm−2 at 500 °C). In this study, we introduce an innovative way to quantify proton kinetic properties (D*H and k*H) of TCOs being significant indicator for characterizing the electrochemical behavior of proton and the mechanism of electrode reactions.

Smoltek aims to make today’s electrolysers for fossil-free hydrogen production more efficient - Smoltek Nanotech Holding AB:

Smoltek has identified the hydrogen market as a first application area outside of semiconductors, where the company's patent-protected nanotechnology may prove to have great potential. By being able to improve the area efficiency in interface layers between membranes, flow field plates and electrodes in electrolyser cells, these cells can be made both cheaper and increase peak hydrogen production. The hydrogen production technology that Smoltek is focusing on is called PEM (proton exchange membrane). In addition to the fact that the PEM process produces very pure hydrogen, a great advantage is that it can already handle higher current density and more variable load than alkaline electrolysis cells, which means that PEM works well together with intermittent energy sources, such as solar and wind power.
